An electronic pet door is a great solution that lets your pet in and out of the house without you having to do that for it. It’s a great invention that provides you and your pet freedom and convenience. They can go out when they please to lay and the sun or do their business and come back when they please.
A big concern is of course security. How can we know that only my pet can go in and out that door? maybe other animals or even burglars (if it’s big enough) can go through it?
Well of course the manufacturers of most electronic pet doors thought about that scenario and most of them use RFID ( radio frequency identification) to detect your pet and unlock the pet door. Some use a microchip embedded in the pet some use an RFID collar. Security wise the microchip is better because the collar can be easily removed from your pet (potentially).

Not the cheapest one ($349 for the medium), but offer great features and nice design. We especially like the directional sensing that only opens the door when the pet is directly facing it, and not when he wonders by for example. The vertical sliding door mechanism is also nice and convenient. If your’e not on a budget this one is highly recommended.

This is a great electronic pet door, however it is the most expensive one on the list (around $2000) and while it is great in features we couldn’t find a reason to justify the price.
Entry via RFID collar or micro cheap (Even your pet’s current one!)
Set schedules to lock/unlock the door
Battery life up to 12 months.
Door Flap size is 6 11/16” (H) by 7” (W) and can be installed in doors, windows or walls. Mostly suited for large cats and small dogs.
The fact that this door can integrate with your current pet micro cheap is a nice feature. We also like the scheduling option – you can set a curfew for your pet. However if you have a medium to a large dog they will probably won’t be able to go through it so make sure to check out your dog size before making a purchase.
When making your final choice these are the most important factors to consider:
- The size of your pet/s.
- Door price range.
- Security features.
- Location of the electronic pet door.
- Ease of installation.
While all doors will come with installation instructions, not everyone are handy men/women and able to install these on their own, especially if it’s a wall installation. So if you will need a professional to help you , count that cost in as well. Remember that at the end of the day you want to make life easier and that’s the main purpose of installing an electronic pet door, so keep that in mind all the time while considering the rest of the features available, sometimes it’s worth to pay a little extra in the short run to get long term convenience .
