Google is making strides in the smart home ecosystem by integrating direct smart home controls into its Gemini app. With this update, users can seamlessly manage their smart home devices through natural language commands, without needing to switch apps or platforms.
How It Works
Previously, Gemini users who wanted to control smart home features were redirected to the Google Assistant. Now, with the latest integration, the Gemini app provides a more cohesive experience. For example, you can simply say, “Set the living room lights to movie mode,” or ask, “Make the house feel cozier,” to trigger various connected devices like lights or thermostats. Additionally, the app allows commands such as “Clean the floors” to activate robotic cleaning devices.
Who Can Access It?
The feature is currently rolling out to Android users who are part of Google Home’s Public Preview program. If you want to take advantage of this new functionality, you’ll need to join the preview program and sign in to the Gemini app using your Google Home account.
Limitations and Security
Despite the convenience, there are still some limitations. Security-related features and the ability to execute pre-set routines still require the use of the Google Home app. Additionally, the integration is only available in English for now, though Google is expected to expand language support in the future.
With this update, Google continues to blur the lines between AI-powered apps and smart home management, aiming to make everyday tasks simpler and more intuitive for its users.
